Learn what it will cost to hit your goals quicker than others
A few days ago I had someone in the gym ask me why I don’t do the class programming. My immediate response is always “ I have had someone program for me for a while now, I have learned so much from him”. I went home later that day and decided to sit with that question for a bit longer.
Why do I have a coach?
Why have I hired a nutrition coach in the past?
After sitting on this thought for about 2 hours, the same 3 answers kept coming up time over time.
“They know more than me”
“They have more experience than me”
“They keep me accountable”
Let’s rewind to September 2021. The COVID scare is starting to slow down, restaurants are starting to open, gyms are moving their members back inside and life is starting to develop a sense of normalcy again. I am sitting at my computer with a choice, do I go back to the gym I have been going to? Or do I find a new one?
After weighing the pros and cons of staying vs. leaving, I decided that it was time to leave and find a new spot. There was nothing wrong with the old gym, I just wanted to be able to utilize the open gym aspect that some Crossfit gyms offer. After doing 2-ish hours of research and reaching out, I heard back from this guy Adam at a gym not too far from me. He invited me to come in Friday night for a partner workout. Long story short I was sold after the workout, I would be coming here. We got to talking after the workout and he offered something that has changed the way I workout forever. He mentioned that he does 1:1 programming for members for no additional cost. I immediately said im in. I did not even hesitate, this was the perfect time since I had left the old gym to try and be more competitive in CrossFit.
It’s been over 3 years now of having someone program workouts for me and I could not be happier about it. The amount of information I have learned from having 3 different coaches(I have had to switch programs for various reasons, that’s another story for another day) over this time period has been astonishing. I feel like I have taken 10 years worth of education and crammed it into 3.
I was thinking about how far I have come myself as a coach and an athlete and it got me to thinking. I would not be where I am today if I did not pay for a coach in both programming and business. I could have taken a much different route and learned through the “normal route” of books and college courses, but I wanted to learn fast. I chose to pay with money to learn from other people’s experiences vs. paying with time. This reminds me of the quote from Alex Hormozi
So I leave you with this question today, Do you want to continue to learn on your own and pay with time? Or would you prefer to pay with money but learn from someone who can boil down years worth of experience and teach you in months?
