What My Grandfather Accidentally Taught Me

My grandfather inadvertently taught me more about fitness that I ever realized

My grandfather is 85 years old and still runs around like he's 60. For most of you reading this, you might think those ages are incredibly old and really old respectively. Hear me out, he feels, thinks, and moves around like he's a 20-25 year younger version of himself. Imagine being 40 and feeling 20, you would think that's great.

For those of you who don't know Poppy, my grandfather, you need to hear some of his stories. While my mom might not think it's entertaining everyone else does. Poppy is 80+ and walks 1-2 miles every morning, still goes to work 3 days a week ( he wishes it could be 5), and does manual labor at work. Poppy started a sprinkler company back in the 80s and has been working there ever since. People need to be more like Poppy, they need to move more during the day. Poppy doesn't do anything extreme besides walk and do his work day in and day out

Poppy has taught me more about fitness and nutrition than I ever realized. I always thought he was just a crazy old man who just ate and did whatever he wanted but when I sat down the other day and thought about it, I realized he is a living embodiment of a healthy lifestyle. He gets in his steps in, he eats what he wants but includes plenty of fruits and veggies and he lives a pain-free life ( or as much as an active 80+ man can).

More people need to live their life like Poppy. You would be shocked with how happy he is by focusing on those 3 aforementioned daily habits. If you would stop focusing so much on achieving a certain look or cutting out food groups, you would be even closer to your final goal than you might think.

Lessons to take from this:

- Stop trying to be like whatever person on your Instagram. They most likely edit their photos
- Focus on what makes you feel strong and energized instead.
- The more energized you feel, the more you'll want to do said activities
- The more you do something, the better you get at it

Ex: you like to run

You start doing it 3x a week

You start getting really good at running

You don't realize it but after a few weeks, you are consistently running further and faster than when you started.

By focusing on what you enjoyed you got better at two lifts with half the effort.

Work smart and enjoy the process
